I’m all by myself in Topeka, KS for training this week. I decided to relieve the night time boredom by purchasing a bottle of bourbon. In keeping with my everyman theme, I decided to keep my purchase under $20. I googled “best liquor store near me” and came up with Fleming Place Wine and Spirits. You can check out there Facebook Here. Jeremy the manager is extremely knowledgeable and has a great selection of bourbon, scotch, and craft beer. If you are ever in Topeka I recommend you stop by and say hello.
I finally decided on the Four Roses Bourbon. It was a hard choice between that and Old Grand Dad. I chose the Four Roses at the advice of the manager. On to the review.
The nose was pretty sweet at first, but once it settled it was really nice. Lots of sweet corn, Oak, Citrus, Floral, and just a hint of caramel. Overall quite appealing.
The first sip is all sweetcorn, I had to take a larger drink in order for it to really open up and show me the layers. The oak, citrus, and vanilla aren’t as pronounced as I would have liked, but they are there. I was also hoping for some spice or a little kick but it is extremely smooth.
The finish is a bit of smokey oak. It is a medium, very smooth finish. I was still looking for a little kick, but was disappointed again. It does warm the stomach and slides down easy.
All in all a great beginner bourbon. Something I’d keep around for friends, but not a daily drinker. I did find that I did enjoy it poured over ice. Makes it a little fruity, so it would be great on a hot day.
I welcome your thoughts and opinions. Review suggestions are welcome.
Until Next Time,
Slàinte Mhath!
